Eat fats to be fit!

Fats are not the devil and here are the reasons you should indulge in them!

Fat is the devil and the reason for unwanted fat around the waistline, right? I would claim the opposite! If you want to live healthy and be on top of your game, then continue reading.

You might remember how people used to flee carbohydrates like it was the pest, and now we’re being told fat is the one to blame. Am I right? Well… I don’t believe the reason was carbohydrates, but that it had to do with bad eating habits. Bad habits which consisted of too much refined carbs, sugars and all in the wrong amount. If I take another wild guess, then I think that the people who suffered from love handles probably didn’t work out that much, or at all either. More likely they sat on the couch cramming lasagne, sweets and bread in the evenings in front of the TV, reaching way more than their daily calorie needs.

Think about it, what keeps the fit good-looking athletes going? You got it! Carbohydrates! What have we learned from that so far? Carbohydrates aren’t dangerous. In fact, carbohydrates are necessary for our bodies to function to perform on optimum level. Simply stay away from refined carbohydrates, eat the good ones combined with lots of vegetable, a healthy amount of meat or fish and then this devil called fat!

Fat won’t kill you Fat is not a bad thing, fat is actually essential for the body to function at it’s best levels. It is a necessary building stone to make up a healthy body. Fat also regulates hormones (if you have screwed up hormones, you wont perform well on your workout or do good on a diet either), it slows down digestion which makes you feel fuller and longer. Fat also transports nutrients through your body and helps to keep your skin and other tissue healthy too. So in the name of the fitness god, eat fat!

Which ones to

So now that we know why fats are good for the body will go through which do enjoy and the ones to throw in the bin. But first, a little notice before we continue. Please stay away from the silly things such as “low-fat” milk, “low-fat” butter, “low-fat” whatever… Actually, stay away from all processed food and I promise that you will become more fit than ever!

The fats that are the good ones are called “Monounsaturated fat”

  • This includes Olive oil
  • Canola oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Peanut oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Avocados
  • Olives
  • Nuts (almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews)
  • Peanut butter

Second type of good fats are “Polyunsaturated fat”

  • Some of the good ones are Soybean oil
  • Corn oil
  • Safflower oil
  • Walnuts
  • Sunflower, sesame, and pumpkin seeds
  • Flaxseed
  • Fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, trout, sardines)
  • Soymilk
  • Tofu

The bad ones are “Saturated fat”

  • High-fat cuts of meat (beef, lamb, pork)
  • Chicken with the skin
  • Whole-fat dairy products (milk and cream)
  • Butter
  • Cheese
  • Ice cream
  • Palm and coconut oil
  • Lard

And other bad ones are “Trans fat”

  • Commercially-baked pastries, cookies, doughnuts, muffins, cakes, pizza dough
  • Packaged snack foods (crackers, microwave popcorn, chips)

Last but not least… like with everything, don’t overdo it. You body’s daily energy (calorie) need is what it is. If you are living an active lifestyle then you can consume more calories to recover of course. However if you overeat, you will gain weight, regardless of what you eat.

So there it is folk, keep things balanced and simply enjoy your fats!
